What is Telmisartan?
Telmisartan is an AT1 receptor blocker with the longest half-life of all sartans (about 24 hours). This means a particularly uniform 24-hour blood pressure protection, even in the critical early hours.
Known brand names are Kinzalmono® and Micardis®. Telmisartan is also available in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (Micardis® Plus). It also has a mild PPAR-gamma activation, which can have a positive effect on metabolism.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Telmisartan
Telmisartan blocks the AT1 receptor particularly long-lasting:
Active mechanism:
- High-selective and long-lasting AT1 blockade
- Longest half-life of all Sartane (about 24 hours)
- Lipophile – high tissue penetration
Additional properties:
- Mild PPAR-gamma activation (substance-promoting)
- Can easily improve insulin resistance
- Cheap effects on lipid metabolism
Clinical meaning: In the ONTARGET study, Telmisartan was equivalent to the ACE inhibitor Ramipril in high-risk patients.
Who is it suitable for?
Telmisartan is suitable for:
- Adults with high blood pressure
- cardiovascular prevention in high risk patients
- Patients who need a reliable 24-hour action
Especially recommended at:
