What is Aarane?
Aarane is a combination inhaler containing cromoglic acid (a mast cell stabilizer) and reproterol (a short-acting beta-2-sympathomimetic). It is used to prevent bronchiale asthma.
Cromoglic acid stabilizes mast cells and prevents the release of inflammatory mediators, while reproterol expands the bronchi. The combination thus offers a double effect.
Aarane is more rarely prescribed today, since inhalative corticoids are more effective. However, it can be used in light allergic asthma or as an alternative in corticoid intolerance.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Cromoglicinsäure, Reproterolhydrochlorid
Aarane combines two mechanisms of action:
Cromoglicic acid (mass cell stabiliser):
- Stabilizes the membrane of mast cells
- Prevents release of histamine and leukotriene
- Preventing allergic reactions
- No direct bronchial enhancement effect
Reproterol (SABA):
- Activated beta-2-adrenoceptors
- Fast bronchodilation
- duration of action: 4-6 hours
- Additional light antiallergic effect
Combined action: Preventive (Cromoglicic Acid) plus symptomatic (Reproterol) in an inhaler.
Who is it suitable for?
Aarane is suitable for:
- Light allergic asthma
- Load-induced asthma (prophylactic)
- Allergeninduced asthma
- Children with light asthma
Restrictions:
- Less effective than inhalative corticoids
- Preventive effect of cromoglic acid
- No effect in acute asthma attack (for cromoglic acid)
Not suitable:
- For medium to heavy asthma
- As sole acute therapy
