What is Viani mite?
Viani mite is a combination inhalator of GlaxoSmithKline which contains the long-acting beta-2-agonist Salmeterol and the inhalative corticoid Fluticasonpropionate. It is equally active with seretide and is marketed under the brand name Viani in some regions.
The term “mite” stands for the low dosage (50/100 μg), which is suitable for patients with light to medium asthma. Viani is also available in higher dosages.
The inhaler is available as a discus (powder inhaler) and is inhaled 2x daily.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Salmeterol, Fluticasonpropionat
Viani has two complementary mechanisms:
Salmeterol (LABA):
- Long-lasting bronchodilation (12 hours)
- High beta-2 selectivity
- Slow action (10-20 minutes)
- Partialagonist
Fluticasonpropionate (ICS):
- Strong anti-inflammatory effect
- High receptor affinity
- Low systemic bioavailability
- Protects against asthma attacks
Combined benefits: Better asthma control than single active substances. Salmeterol and Fluticason are mutually reinforcing their effect.
Who is it suitable for?
Viani mite is suitable for:
- Asthma in adults and children from 4 years
- If ICS alone is not enough
- As maintenance therapy
Not suitable:
- As an emergency medication (salmeterol acts too slowly)
- For MART therapy
- As a single need therapy
Important: Always provide fast-acting reliever (Salbutamol)!
